2013 Civil War Adventure Itinerary

Civil War Adventurers and their families can use this itinerary to learn more about most of the stops we will be visiting along our 9-Day trip. My goal is to have students write posts describing their experiences and answering questions that rise up throughout the trip. 

  • Day 1: Monday May 27th – Memorial Day                                    

5:00 AM (CST) Leave MUHS                                              mitchell grave

12:30 (EST) Hartsville, IN Barton Mitchell Marker (27th IN) & Grave Site at Baptist Cemetery:

Memorial Day Service w/ local news editor and historian, Harry McCawley, historian Nick Sacco and members of the John B. Anderson Camp #223 who are direct descendants of  Union Veterans of the Civil War: 

  • A member of the Anderson Camp #223 will provide a brief talk about Barton’s life.
  • Graveside rifle volley
  • Graveside services to include MUHS Students presentation of flowers to Barton’s grave.

(Baptist Cemetery on the edge of Hartsville. Head east on 500 N off State Road 9 — south of the Hope Town Square.)

Meet Professor Christian End at Xavier University, ’92 MUHS Alumnus.

Arrive: Cincinnati, OH – stay at Xavier University Dorm

Car Ferry across Ohio River from KY to Higginsport, OH – Underground Railroad sites

10 am @ Rankin House (Underground RR NHS), Ripley OH

Buffington Island Battlefield, OH

Parkersburg – Blennerhassett Island, WV (Aaron Burr Insurrection Site), WV

Philippi Battlefield, WV

Charles Town (John Brown Execution Site), WV

Washington, DC – Stay George Washington University

Carver Hospital/GWU Campus

9:15 am U.S. Capital Tour – scheduled w/ Senator Johnson’s Office

3:00 (Option) The Capital and the Congress Civil War Tour (Get passes for this tour at one of the Information Desks on the lower level of the Visitor Center)
