MUHS Southern Civil War Adventure Itinerary

2014 Southern Civil War Adventure (May 26-June 4, 2014)

15 Students & 6 MUHS Faculty will follow the stories of the following historical figures along our journey through Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.

This is a close representation of the Civil War sites that our group will visit (aside from North Carolina).

Day 1: Leave MUHS (5 am)

Day 2:

Day 3 Wednesday, May 28 (Meet Joe McGill of Slave Dwelling Project)

  • 9:00 am           Arrive @ Kathwood Plantation, Aiken, SC for work on slave cabin
  • Noon               Lunch @ Kathwood (Pizza)
  • 1:00 pm           Leave Kathwood
  • 3:30 pm           Charleston Library Public Program: MUHS Faculty/Student Presentation
  • 5:30 pm           Dinner Gullah Cuisine
  • 7:30 pm           Arrive Old City Jail
  • 8:00 pm           Story Telling Old City Jail
  • Sleep at Old City jail

Day 4 Thursday, May 29

  •  9:00 am           Depart for Morris Island from Patriots Point
  • 9:30 am           Arrive at Morris Island (Fort Wagner!)
  • 11:00 am         Depart Morris Island
  • 11:30 am         Disembark at Patriots Point
  • 11:30 am         Visit and Lunch at Patriots Point
  • 1:30 pm           Department Patriots Point for Fort Sumter
  • 2:00 pm           Arrive at Fort Sumter
  • 3:00 pm           Depart Fort Sumter
  • 3:30 pm           Arrive at Patriots Point
  • 3:30 pm           Depart Charleston, SC for Hopsewee Plantation
  • 5:00 pm           Arrive at Hopsewee Plantation
  • 6:00 pm           Dinner at Hopsewee Plantation
  • Spend the night in the slave cabins at Hopsewee Plantation

Day 5 Friday, May 31

  • 8:30                 Breakfast at Hopsewee Plantation
  • 9:30                 Hampton Plantation
  • 10:30               Leave Hampton Plantation
  • 11:30               Charles Pinckney Site
  • 12:30               Lunch TBD
  • 2:00                 Boone Hall Plantation
  • 4:00                 McLeod Plantation
  • 6:00                 Arrive at Magnolia Plantation
  • Eat and Spend the Night at Magnolia Plantation

Day 6: Leave Joe & Charleston, SC

  • Hunley Museum at Warren Lasch Conservation Center (10am)
  • Programming at Penn Center
  • Free Time on Local Beach
  • Stay Penn Center, St. Helena Island, SC

Day 7: Across Georgia
